If you’re looking for a more secluded route up onto Kinder Scout, the wilds of Jaggers Clough are certainly unlikely to be busy. The dramatic narrow valley, with steep sides covered in ferns and the odd random holly tree, leads up from the pretty Backside Wood at Edale End to the top of the plateau close to Mad Woman’s Stones. The path is not always straightforward (or visible!) and it is advisable not to try to climb the clough after heavy rain as parts of the route involve climbing up the stream bed, but Jaggers will reward your perseverance with some lovely secluded spots, some fun scrambles and - of course - a wonderful view at the end.
You can reach Jaggers Clough from Edale, walking along the valley through Ollerbrook towards the Youth Hostel and Clough Farm. But the route below cuts out the busy village entirely by starting and finishing at Nether Booth, where there is a small car park. The route takes you past Clough Farm to the bottom of Jaggers, and then up and along the plateau. Of course, you can extend the loop to take in Ringing Roger, the Nab and Grindsbrook Booth (and even further to Upper Booth) if you want to make a day of it.
Please note: Jaggers Clough is not the easiest path, with some scrambling, a stream that will be tricky to navigate after a heavy rainfall and a steep, rocky climb at the end. Please take care if choosing to follow this route, and always wear suitable footwear.
